New online exhibition and light installation for Holocaust Memorial Day, ‘Be the light in the Darkness. Light installations in purple will be in Barry town at the Town Hall, Art Central Gallery and Library on King Square; the Dock Offices on Millennium Way; and the Western Shelter on Barry Island by Simon Fenoulhet, 27 January to 1 February, part of a new national event.

An online event, ‘The Commitment’, will be streamed on the Vale of Glamorgan website.

The arts development service has promoted a community arts workshop with the theme of ‘shoes’, details below. Artwork for both schools and community projects will be submitted digitally for an online exhibition. Entries until 19th February. The exhibition will be shown on the Art Central Gallery webpage and Facebook site.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 Community Arts Opportunity

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021, with this year’s theme is

Be the Light in the Darkness’

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Arts Development Service is working in partnership with the Holocaust Memorial Trust to mark this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day with a community arts engagement project.

Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the largest concentration camps created in Germany, during the Second World War.


We are inviting you to participate in our online art event that will reflect this year’s theme and submit an image of a pair of shoes or a shoe, that will tell a story; a special memory, birthday, wedding, a day out, who they belong to using your garden home a created place and adding different art forms and images, the story is yours to tell.

Using a camera or mobile phone or other device a send your image together with a simple written message that, reflects a specific theme such as; ‘Peace, Love, Light, Hope, Acceptance, Caring, Support, Endurance, Home and more’ this will be digitally shown on our web and social media pages.

Open to all, submit your finished artwork digitally together with your name and short message by email to Artcentral@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk up until 12noon on the 19th February 2021 to mark, Holocaust Memorial Day. Submissions will be received up until 12:00 noon on Friday 19th February 2021. We will place submissions on our web and social media pages to commemorate and remember the event. We can only accept artworks for this online exhibition that are appropriate for the theme.
